In the following guide, the Knoepfler Chevrolet Co. service center explores safely removing a car battery. Read on to learn more, and don’t hesitate to call us at (712) 639-6022 or reach out online!

Preparation for Removing a Car Battery

To understand how to remove a car battery, it’s important to acquaint yourself with the task at hand. Car batteries have enough amperage to severely injure or electrocute someone. While a typical battery’s voltage level is such that you’ll be okay touching battery terminals, you should never touch a car battery terminal without insulated work gloves on.

It’s important to wear safety goggles for eye protection against corrosive battery agents. Always turn off your car before attempting to remove the battery, as the largest car battery risk is an explosion.

Keeping all of the above in mind, it’s a good idea to do the following:

  • Keep your battery cables in the proper place with zip ties. If they touch, it may cause deadly explosion-inducing sparks.
  • Cover the positive battery cable end with a cloth once it’s removed to avoid the risk of metal-to-metal contact.
  • Remove any metal or jewelry, including watches necklaces, and bracelets, to prevent electrocution.
  • Stay in a well-ventilated area to protect yourself from outgassing from any dangerous and flammable liquids used in your car battery.

Here’s How to Remove a Car Battery Step-By-Step

Once you’re prepared, follow these steps to remove your battery:

  1. Find your negative battery terminal. It should have a black plastic cover or a minus sign.
  2. Locate the bolt head of the negative terminal and with a socket or wrench, hold it steady.
  3. Use another wrench to remove the nut.
  4. Pull off the negative cable and place it safely away from the battery.
  5. Repeat the above steps for your positive cable. Be careful to ensure that the two battery cables don’t touch!
  6. If your battery is held by a securing bracket, use a screwdriver, wrench, or socket to take out the screws and bold that hold it in place.
  7. Lift your battery straight out of the bracket. Remember that it can be heavy.

If this process seems too time-consuming, or you’re worried about executing it on your own, come down to the Knoepfler Chevrolet Co. service center! Our team will happily remove your battery and replace it with the correct one, quickly and safely.
